Python Tutorial Volume 1:0

Python Tutorial Volume 1: This is a series of Python Tutorials that will Introduce you to programming Using Python. Its important to note that Python is not a new programming Language, Python is an interpreted, high-level, general-purpose programming language. Created by Guido van Rossum and first released in 1991, Python has a design philosophy that emphasizes code readability, notably using significant whitespace. It provides constructs that enable clear programming on both small and large scales.  (Wikipedia).

Python Programming Language can be used for the following

  • web development (server-side),
  • software development,
  • mathematics,
  • system scripting.

In a broader View

  • Python can be used to create web applications on a server.
  • Python can be used to create workflows alongside software.
  • Python can use database systems to connect. It can read and modify files as well.
  • Python can be used for data handling and complex mathematics.
  • Python can be used for rapid prototyping, or for production-ready software development.

Why do you Need to Learn Python?

  • It works on various platforms( Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.).
  • It has a simple, English- speaking syntax.
  • It has a syntax that allows developers to write programs with fewer lines than other languages for programming.
  • It runs on an interpreter system, which means that code can be executed immediately after writing. This means prototyping can be extremely fast.
  • It can be processed in a process, an object- oriented or functional manner.

Latest Version of Python?

Latest Version of python as at the time this tutorial is written is Python 3.7

To check if python is installed  or the version installed on a Linux or Mac, open the command line on Linux or open the terminal on Mac and type:

python –version

 EDITORS

Python can be written  in an Integrated Development Environment (IDE), such as Thonny, Pycharm, Netbeans or Eclipse that are particularly used when managing numerous collections of Python files. but this Tutorial will make use of Text Editor.

Python Syntax VS programming languages

  • Python was designed to be readable and has some similarities with the English language with a mathematical influence.
  • In contrast to other programming languages that often use semicolons or parentheses, Python uses new lines to complete the command.
  • Python relies on indentation to define the scope, such as the scope of loops, functions and classes, using whitespace. For this purpose, other programming languages often use curly brackets.

How Can I Download Python?

If you find that you do not have python installed on your computer, then you can download it for free from the following website: https://www.python.org/

Before I end this introduction : Lets do something Practical

When i said Python is an interpreted programming language, I means that as a programmer you write Python (Saved with .py Extension) files written in a text editor (as in this Tutorial) and then put those files into the python interpreter to be executed.

To write our first Pythons Programming open your editor

print(“Hello, World! This is my first Python Program”)

Python HelloWorld

Save the file as HelloWorld.py.

To run a python file is like this on the command line:

C:\Users\Your Name\Your Directory>python helloworld.py

Where “helloworld.py” is the name of your python file.

Simple as that. Save your file. Open your command line, navigate to the directory where you saved your file, and run:

C:\Users\Your Name\Your Directory>python helloworld.py

The output should read:

Python HelloWorld Output

Hello, World! This is my first Python Program
Congratulations, you have written and executed your first Python program.
To quit the python command line interface:
exit()
